Steel City Coffee House offers two nights of open mic every week. Open mic is a special institution, almost every famous musician has started their career at an open mic somewhere.
Mad Poet's Society Open Mic:
1st Tuesday of the Month 7-10 PM. [FREE]
Join the Mad Poet's Society for their special once a month Open Mic on the 1st Tuesday of every month. Eileen D'Angelo of the Mad Poet's Society hosts and invites special guest poets. However, the night is open to poets and musicians Signup in person at the venue at 6:30 PM.
Acoustic Tuesday's Open Mic:
2nd, 3rd, 4th (and 5th if applicable) Tuesdays: 7:00 PM- 10:00 PM [$3.00 Cover]

Our newest in open mic is our Acoustic Tuesdays Open Mic (started in 2008) which meets on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th (and 5th if applicable) Tuesdays of the month. Our current Acoustic Tuesdays host is J.D. Malone. Tuesdays Open mic is a little more laid back than our traditional open mic and is for acoustic performances only, no drums, no amps. Generally artists get between 2-4 songs, depending on attendance. Signup is at 6:30 PM at the venue.
About J. D. Malone:
J.D. Malone has been a staple in the Philadelphia area music scene since 1993 when he founded the pop/rock band Steamroller Picnic. Steamroller Picnic performed more than 200 shows a year for ten years supported by national sponsors like Coors Light and Bud Light. He also worked with Gerry McWilliams, touring as Malone and McWilliams from 2004-2006. Malone started working on his solo project in 2007 after winning several songwriting contests. He has shared the stage with many national abd regionally touring acts, including: Third Eye Blind, Eve 6, Sugar Ray, Vertical Horizon, Fuel, Familiar 48, Living Colour, The Fixx, July for Kings, Lola Ray, Robert Hazard, Silvertide, John Faye Power Trip, The Martians, The Bogmen, Dee Snyder, John Eddie, Danelia Cotton, Craig Bickhardt, Jim Photoglo, Idlewheel, Eric Andersen, Tom Gillam and Phil Vasser.
J.D. Malone has started and hosted various music showcases and open mics throughout the region including the Y-100 Tuesday Night Music Club, open mics at Puck Live, Chaplin's the Music Cafe' and now Steel City Coffee House.
Open Mic:
Every Thursday 7:30-10:30 PM [$3.00 Cover]
Steel City Coffee House launched the Thursday Night Open Mic back in 2003 and it has become the premiere open mic in the area bringing well over 100 people in and out during the evening. Thursday open mic night features a variety of local and regional talent. In general, each performance lasts for 2-songs/10-minutes. You never know what's up next, acoustic guitar, flute, poem, bass, mandolin, or a native american chant.Our open mic runs from 7:30 -10:30 every Thursday night. Signup begins at 6:30 PM
Our current Thursday night host is David Spencer. David Spencer is a talented musician and vocalist who has played with various artists, including the group “Hot Fossil Project” which was one of the first bands to grace our open mic stage in the early years 2002/2004.
Note: We cannot accommodate drum kits on Open Mic Night. Please be prepared to simply plug and play, no extensive setups or amplifiers that have to be mic'd. We also do not allow prerecorded music or any background music to be played through our CD system. The open mic host has the final say on what he/she will allow on the stage. Although we believe in freedom of speech since the crowd does have many young people, please avoid excessive vulgarity. Those insisting on using excessive vulgarity during their performances will be banned from open mic. There is no BYO on open mic night.
